Five babies in England have died after being diagnosed with whooping cough, also known as the ‘100-day cough’, so far this year. More than 2,700 whooping cough cases have been reported across England so far this year, according to health officials. This is more than triple the amount recorded in the whole of last year. Whooping cough, officially known as pertussis, is a bacterial infection of the lungs and breathing tubes. The infection can lead to a prolonged cough that is easily spread.
