ANDRE ONANA RECEIVES TWO YELLOW CARDS WITHOUT BEING SENT OFF, THE REASON

On Sunday, Manchester United qualified for the FA Cup final after a penalty shootout, in which Andre Onana received a second yellow card without being sent off.

After Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martínez a few days ago, it is Onana’s turn to experience the same scenario. The Cameroonian goalkeeper was shown a yellow card in regulation time in their FA Cup semi-final against Coventry City on Sunday, before picking up another in the penalty shootout.

Despite these two cards, Onana was not sent off the pitch. Because of Martinez’s case, the Cameroonian was aware of the regulations. “I knew the rules. Once the match was over and the penalty shoot-out had begun, the referee declared that the first yellow card no longer applied. It was like a new beginning,” he said afterwards on Man Utd’s club channel.

Still, Onana should have been scared, because in the FA Cup tournament, the rule applies that if you receive a total of two yellow cards in the tournament, you will be suspended. However, Onana’s second yellow card does not mean the goalkeeper should miss the final against Manchester City.

The rule of dismissals for yellow cards received ends in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, unless the yellow cards are handed out in a single match, without penalty shootouts. Onana can therefore continue his heroic role in the FA Cup semi-final, having saved Callum O’Hare’s penalty in the final against rivals Man City.
