Parliament operates under a set of rules designed to uphold decorum and democratic principles. Adherence to these rules reflects maturity and respect for the institution. However, recent incidents have highlighted a concerning trend of members disregarding the authority of presiding officers.
For instance, when Hon. Ssekikubo persisted in speaking out of turn despite being advised by the Speaker to wait his turn, it displayed a lack of respect for parliamentary protocol. Similarly, the Leader of Opposition, Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi, failed to uphold the dignity of his office by repeatedly raising issues for personal gain rather than fostering unity.
These incidents raise questions about the caliber of young leaders emerging in our political landscape and whether the sanctity of esteemed offices like that of the Leader of Opposition is being upheld. It is imperative for all members of Parliament to demonstrate respect for the rules and the institution they serve to maintain its integrity and effectiveness*
