Minister for Luwero-Rwenzori Hon Alice Kaboyo has commissioned classroom blocks that were constructed by her ministry at Kapeeka Primary School in Nakaseke district.

The minister, who was flanked by her Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs counterpart, Hon. Keefa Kyofatogabye launched the structures in the presence of local leaders and residents of the district.

Each of the two blocks has two classrooms, a store, an office and a 5000-litre water tank, as well as a 5-stance pit latrine.

The Minister in her remarks appealed to the school administrators to take good care of the structures but also fully renovate the older blocks, one of which was said to be almost 100 years old and another about 70 years old.

“These structures are good for the history of the school, and you need to renovate them,” said the Minister.

“Do not focus on the ones we built yesterday. Look after the old ones as well; paint them and use them well so they can live 200 or 300 years. Try to coordinate and bring in the old boys of the school to mobilize funds to have these buildings renovated.”

According to the school head teacher, Abbey Mukyawe, Kapeeka Primary School has a population of 786 learners, 403 boys and 383 girls. However, the school, which is set to mark its 100th anniversary in 2027, has been grappling with some challenges including fees-defaulters, understaffing and a lack of basic needs such as a library, and staff quarters.

On his part, the Minister for Kampala Hon Kyofatogabye commended the efforts being undertaken to boost academic performance in the district.

The minister particularly thanked District Chairman Ignatius Koomu Kiwanuka, who recently made national news when he forced teachers from schools that performed poorly in the last PLE national exams to sit for Mock exams themselves. Koomu ultimately demoted some of the least-performing head teachers and transferred them to other schools.

“If the chairman has come up with this kind of innovative solution, we all need to get behind him,” said Minister Kyofatogabye.

“I know that each one of the parents here wants their children to be in the first grade”

Meanwhile, Minister Kaboyo called upon the residents of Nakaseke to work with the RDC Rosemary Byabashaija to combat land grabbing in the area.

The RDC in her speech has appealed for the central government’s support to deal with their ever-rising land-grabbing crisis where people come in claiming to be State House staff and use brute force to evict residents.

You need to work with the RDC especially you who have been here for a longer period of time and know the story of this land,” she said.

The Minister also gave a breakdown of the funds that her ministry has disbursed to Nakaseke District. Under the Parish Community Associations (PCAs) she said the Ministery had handed out Shs 30 million to each of the 25 parishes totalling 750 million. The Ministry also handed out Shs 250 million to different associations under the Micro-Projects program and a total of 2205 iron sheets that went to 13 primary schools and one residential home for a Civilian veteran.

“I also wish to thank Gen. Salim Saleh, who I was informed that he constructed one of the blocks at the school and also purchased 20 acres of land to expand the sister secondary school. Gen Saleh has made an important contribution to the development of Nakaseke in the time that he has been there” Minister Alice Kaboyo.
