Addis Ababa, February 17, 2024 (FBC) – President of Islamic Republic of Mauritania, Mohamed Ould Cheikh, has officially taken over Chairmanship of the African Union from the President of Union of Comoros, Azali Assoumani at the 37th Session of the Assembly.

In his acceptance speech, the Mauritanian president underscored the need to realize the founding aspiration of the pan-African bloc, mainly Africa’s socio-economic independence, its unity and prosperity.

“I am honored by this choice and I understand the volume of responsibilities I have, particularly in the midst of this critical period,” he said.

Meanwhile, Assoumani highlighted key issues during his chairmanship, including ensuring Africa’s stability and development, boosting the role of the AU in particular and Africa in general in multilateral stages, as well as the reform of the 55-member organization.

The two-day summit is held under the AU’s theme for the year 2024: “Educate an African fit for the 21st Century: Building resilient education systems for increased access to inclusive, lifelong, quality and relevant learning in Africa.”

President Mohamed Ould Cheikh expressed gratitude to the people and the government of Ethiopia for the hospitality and facilitation of all the favorable conditions for the summit.

He also vowed to contribute his part in strengthening the efforts to revolutionize the education system in Africa through addressing the bottlenecks that are hampering the growth of the sector.

The new chairperson also stressed the need to unleash potentials of the women in the continent to enable them actively in participate in key leadership position.

He also pledged to address the environmental and security challenges in the continent he described as the major factors that are impeding impediments development endeavors of the continent.

Saying that promising progress has been made in different areas including the establishment of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), among others, the chairperson called for concreted efforts to accelerate the progress.

Mohamed Ould Cheikh stated that civil wars and terrorism continue to jeopardizing peace and stability of the continent and destroy infrastructural facilities and disrupt the economic system, calling for concerted efforts to ensure peace in the continent.

He also stressed the need to increase the level of cooperation within the regional economic communities.
