KCCA TO UPGRADE ACCESS ROADS AND DRAINAGE AT BUSEGA MARKET AHEAD OF OPENING

The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) is commencing work on access roads and the drainage system around Busega Market in Rubaga Division to prepare for its grand opening.

These essential improvements will facilitate the establishment of a vibrant and accessible marketplace and are part of a broader effort to strengthen this critical economic center.

On Friday, the Minister for Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, Hajat Minsa Kabanda, along with other officials from Kampala, conducted an assessment tour of the market, demonstrating the government’s dedication to this project.

The tour included the presence of State Minister for Kampala Kabuye Kyofatogabye, KCCA Executive Director Dorothy Kisaka, KCCA Deputy Executive Director Eng. David Luyimbazi, and Rubaga Division Deputy RCC Anderson Burora.

Kabanda reiterated the government’s commitment by setting a target deadline for completing all necessary works by December 15th. Currently, Old Mubende Road is under construction, with other access roads and drainage to be addressed immediately.

Kabanda also revealed that issues regarding the allocation of stalls must be resolved ahead of the opening.

“To maintain fairness in the allocation of market stalls, an allocation committee has been put in place to oversee the distribution process. Priority will be given to former occupants and individuals who previously operated on the roadside.”

Importantly, KCCA will adhere to the regulations outlined in The Markets Act, 2023, and no fees will be charged for stall allocation. To accommodate the growing demand, Kabanda revealed that 1600 stalls would be allocated, with hopes of accommodating over 2000 traders.

Kisaka, the Executive Director of KCCA, revealed that the technical team is set to start the construction of the roads and drainage.

“The condition of the access road has been a major stumbling block for us,” she revealed. “On the technical side, we are committed to expediting the process to make the market operational as soon as possible.”

The objective is clear: by the beginning of next year, KCCA aims to ensure that the market is fully operational. Addressing drainage issues is equally crucial, creating a more hospitable environment for both traders and customers.

A critical part of achieving this goal is the enhancement of the access roads surrounding the market, which will vastly improve the flow of people and goods.

With these infrastructure improvements, Busega Market is poised to become a bustling and prosperous center of commerce.
