TOKYO — Prince Hisahito, the 17-year-old son of Crown Prince Akishino (Fumihito) and second in line to the Japanese Imperial throne, has been infected with the coronavirus, the Imperial Household Agency announced on Sept. 14.

According to the agency, the prince experienced a fever after returning home from his high school on Sept. 13. A test performed at the time returned negative results, but as the prince’s fever remained the following morning, a second test was taken which confirmed he was infected.

The prince is expected to rest at his residence until Sept. 18.

As a precaution, Crown Prince Fumihito and Crown Princess Kiko were also tested for the coronavirus on the morning of Sept. 14, and the results came back negative. A press conference regarding their official trip to Vietnam from Sept. 20 to 25, which they were scheduled to attend from 10 a.m. on Sept. 14, has been postponed to 11 a.m. on Sept. 15.
