The Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) is investigating circumstances that led to the Air Forces helicopter crash land in Karamoja.
In a press statement, Defence spokesperson Brig Gen. Felix Kulayigye says the incident happened at Nadiket village, located about 5km West of Moroto Barracks, in Loptuk sub country in Moroto district on Saturday afternoon.
He says the MI 24 (Gunship) Reg No. AF 822 crash landed while on routine operations in Karamoja sub-region under the 3rd Division area of responsibility
Kulayigye adds that the pilot and all the three aircrew who were on board are safe and the scene has been secured for further management.
The army appeals to the members of the surrounding community to desist from accessing the scene of the accident to avoid interfering with investigations being conducted by a technical team of UPDF Airforce experts
In September 2022, unspecified number of UPDF soldiers were feared dead after the Army’s Mi-17 helicopter crashed in eastern DR Congo.
Previous incidents
On September 24, 2022, UPDF’s MI- 24 Gunship crashed near Saaka Airfield in Fort Portal city, Kabalore district in Western Uganda, no deaths were recorded.
On February 11, 2021, Capt Carol Busingye perished in a military aircraft that crashed near Entebbe International Airport.
In January 2020, a UPDF jet ranger crashed in Butambala district, claiming the lives of Maj Naomi Kalungi and Cadet pilot Benon Wakola.
