CCTV footage has revealed new details of the raid conducted at the residence of former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s eldest son, Jomo Kenyatta, in Karen, Nairobi County.

The footage captured a Subaru Forester bearing South Sudanese number plates arriving at Jomo’s home on Friday, July 21, at 2:26 pm. The vehicle was suspected to be operated by officers attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

According to the clip, the vehicle parked for a few minutes at the side of the road before the security personnel at Jomo’s residence approached it to enquire about their intentions.

After a brief conversation, Jomo’s security personnel went back to the gate and was followed by the driver of the Subaru who alighted thereafter.

Armed with a notebook, the footage captured the driver reading to the security detail the number of Uhuru’s family members and associates with registered firearms.

It was reported that the officers sought 28 weapons from Uhuru’s son and other people close to the family. The driver, however, did not disclose the reasons why the firearms were to be seized.

After multiple failed attempts by the officers to gain entry to Jomo’s home, the detectives demanded the owners of the weapons surrender their guns to the Karen Police Station.

The standoff persisted until minutes past 7:00 pm when Uhuru’s convoy of three vehicles arrived at the residence. At the time, the officers had decided to leave the premises, minutes before Uhuru’s arrival.

An officer privy to the matter revealed that the detectives did not want a confrontation with the former President and hence decided to leave the premises. Further, the officers used a vehicle bearing foreign number plates to conceal the identity of the undercover team.

At the homestead, Uhuru accused the State of harassing his family instead of facing him directly.

“If I am the problem, just come for me. My silence doesn’t imply fear. Come directly for me. Why involve my mother or my son in whatever is happening? Is it a crime for me to associate with Raila?” He questioned.

Interior CS Kithure Kindiki, however, confirmed that the raid on Jomo’s residence sought to establish whether weapons, including firearms, were used to fuel violence during the Azimio la Umoja mass protests.

Further, the police sought to find out whether the said firearms were supplied by a wide network of civilian firearm holders and leaders of known criminal gangs.
