The President of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has said the educational system must put confidence back into the African people. He was represented by the Vice President H. E. Jessica Alupo at Makerere University leadership Symposium which was attended by academic leaders from allover Uganda
He said, “For instance, with the Banyankore, the darker you were, the more beautiful you were.” The Banyankore would say: “Nairaguza ebinyatsi” She is so black that when she sits on the grass, the grass itself becomes black.
But, now, because of the colonial thinking, blackness is frowned on. You find someone going to get acids to rub off the African colour. The President went on to describe the Honourable Minister of Education and Sports, Maama Janet, as an original beautiful Ntungamo-indigenous product.
The keynote speaker at the Leadership Symposium in Makerere was Professor Vincent Anigbogu from Nigeria, who urged the leaders of universities to ensure that the body of knowledge gained by the learners is translated into community development. Education, for the sake of it, is not the goal. It must benefit the people. The forum was hosted by the Chairman University Council, Mrs Lorna Magara
