The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among, yesterday afternoon, 17th Friday 2023 donated Shs10 million to the Uganda National Women’s Basketball Team, also known as the “Gazelles”. The team is participating in the Afro Basket Tournament, an equivalent of the African Cup of Nations.
The Speaker made the donation as part of her commitment to ensure that the gazelles excel in Sunday’s final game in Kigali, Rwanda.
She implored the girls to exercise discipline both on court and in the camp, and beseeched them to work hard and make Uganda proud.
“We are committed to making sure that you succeed in your endeavors. This is why Parliament is working to expedite the Sports Bill and ensure that you have adequate budget allocations. I urge you to work hard and be disciplined always,” she said.
Among also reminded the gazelles that they are a torch and inspiration to so many young girls who will be watching them and as such owed it to the nation to not only promote Uganda, but also set good examples.
“Uganda is bigger than all of us … I feel good when I see even just one person promoting the country. So go out there and shine. Leave the financial matters to us to handle,” she said.
The tournament takes place every 2 years and the winner of the championship will qualify for the finals in Rwanda.
Reigning champions, Kenya will battle against Egypt, Rwanda, South Sudan and host Uganda for the ticket to this year’s Women’s AfroBasket tournament slated for July in Kigali, Rwanda.
