Former Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard would reportedly be ‘very keen’ to join Leeds United following the club’s decision to sack Jesse Marsch.
Leeds have been without a manager since Marsch was sacked at the start of this week. The American was dismissed after around a year in charge at Elland Road.
He helped the Yorkshire outfit avoid relegation last season but they are without a win in eight games in the Premier League. The final straw that led to Marsch being sacked was last weekend’s 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest.
Following their 2-2 draw against Man Utd in midweek, Leeds are 16th in the Premier League but they are just one point clear of the bottom three.
Leeds were initially keen to appoint former assistant Carlos Corberan, but he has opted to commit his future to West Brom by signing a new contract until 2027.
Rayo Vallecano’s Andoni Iraola and Feyenoord’s Arne Slot have also been targeted. Football Insider are reporting that their move for Iraola was ‘blocked’ by the Spanish outfit, while Slot has ‘chosen to remain’ in the Netherlands.
After these three ‘failures’, Leeds United are ‘considering Gerrard as an alternative’. He has been out of work since he was sacked by Aston Villa last November.
The Liverpool legend previously did a great job at Rangers as he helped then win the Scottish Premiership. But his spell at Villa was largely below-par before he was replaced by Unai Emery.
It is said that the 42-year-old ‘would jump at the chance to return to Premier League management with the Yorkshire giants’.
Leeds previously ‘kept tabs’ on Gerrard while he was at Rangers and he was considered a ‘top target’ while Marcelo Bielsa’s future was ‘up in the air’.
Ex-Leeds United forward Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink has claimed that Gerrard would be the “safest bet” for his former club as he “knows the Premier League.
“The safest bet is someone that knows the Premier League. They have to come in and get Elland Road rocking again,” Hasselbaink told Casinos En Ligne.
“Just look at what Sean Dyche did in his first game at Everton, who have now found a little sparkle. Hiring someone that knows the Premier League is the best solution.
“Steven Gerrard is a great shout. He knows the Premier League but he also knew what went wrong at Aston Villa. He’s a big personality and can handle the pressure of Leeds as a big club, having also managed at Rangers. I can see him managing Leeds.”
