The Turkish club will receive between £2million and £3million for the Holland international to end his loan from Burnley and join United for the rest of the season, adding to Erik Ten Hag’s options in attack as a No9.
Weghorst, 30, has agreed personal terms over a return to the Premier League after relegation last season following his £12million move from Wolfsburg a year ago, with paperwork drawn up and ready to be submitted when Besiktas give the green light.
He scored two goals during his time at Turf Moor and could not prevent them going down to the Championship, and has scored eight goals during his spell in Turkey.
Erik ten Hag has targeted him as an orthodox centre-forward to add to his options after Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure and Jadon Sancho’s absence leaving him short on numbers in attack.
Besiktas have been in talks with Cameroon striker Vincent Aboubakar, who is set to leave Al Nassr now Ronaldo has arrived at the Saudi Arabian club.
After the EFL Cup win over Charlton, Ten Hag could not provide an update on the deal but admitted his team needed to be more ruthless in front of goal.
“We see progress after the winter and many games, but I think we have to be more clinical,” he said. “We have scoring pace in our team, you now see (Marcus) Rashford and that wasn’t there in the start of the season, now he is in the rhythm. I am convinced more players can do it. So we have pace to score the goals and also we can score from set plays.”
United were given an injury scare ahead of the Manchester derby on Saturday when Diogo Dalot went off before the interval.
“It was a precaution, we have to see in the coming hours and make a decision and Donny (van de Beek) still we are doing some final investigations,” Ten Hag confirmed.
