This will be the men’s team’s sixth appearance at the World Cup and they go into the tournament ranked 38th in the world, in the latest Fifa rankings.

The side is under the watch of Graham Arnold, the former Sydney FC coach who holds several records in Australia’s top-flight A-League, including the second most wins in the competition’s history and the best career winning percentage and unbeaten percentage.

Australia are champion of two confederations, having won the OFC Nations Cup four times between 1980 and 2004, as well as the AFC Asian Cup in 2015.

Their spell in the Middle East will feature two familiar rivals, Denmark and France, who were also drawn in their group at Russia 2018 and proved better.

During their final warm-up matches, they beat neighbours New Zealand 1-0 and 2-0.
