Thomas Tuchel has described chasing Manchester City and Liverpool as a challenge that makes him want to get out of bed early every morning and one Chelsea will not up on.
The Blues have been the best of the rest behind City and Liverpool this season, sitting third in the Premier League and going out cruelly against Real Madrid in the Champions League while the top-flight’s top two reached the semis.
Chelsea also lost the Carabao Cup final to Liverpool on penalties and could face either Pep Guardiola or Jurgen Klopp’s side in the FA Cup final if the Londoners can get past Crystal Palace in the last four.
This season so far has provided a reminder of the work still required to close the gap though Tuchel said Chelsea’s injuries and Covid issues, which included an outbreak in December, derailed their attempts to cut it further.
He said: ‘We compete with maybe the two most consistent and maybe the best teams in Premier League history at the moment. But I like it.
‘I have to say I like it. It brings you out of bed early and we will not stop thinking how we can close the gap in this season, which is not over.
‘We are still fighting and we should not stop to collect the maximum points possible, and then we will put a line under it, we will analyse it, try to find what’s good and where we can still grow.
‘We have to sort our situation out in general at the club and hopefully we are ready to in the same spirit like we started the season. We were ready to go the full race for the full length.
‘We struggled in between with injuries and the Corona situation more than they did. Full credit to them, they are the example and we will not give in.’
