EALA ON THE SALE OF DONKEYS.

The East African Assembly has passed a motion arguing the council of ministers and partner states to develop a regional framework of protecting donkeys and regulating donkey skin trade with close to 5.9M donkeys facing slaughter in the name of ejiao in China, a chinese traditional remedy for skin care aged and boosting manpower.

Throughout Africa, donkeys are a lifeline to communities especially in rural areas where they transport goods to markets, fetching water and transporting families in hard to reach areas but the population has declined significantly due to lucrative trade in china.
Veronica Kadogo, the mover of the motion told the Eala Assembly sitting in Kampala that the donkey population in several East African states is currently under threat due to the demand for its skin.
Dr.Gerald Siranda told the Assembly that the historic agreement to ban the slaughter of donkeys was made in 2024 during the 37th African Union summit in Ethiopia with a move to preserve their growth.
However, Sankok David Ole representing  Kenya opposed the motion maintaining that the motion hinges on the rights of the less privileged.
