RAF jets have been sent out to locate an aircraft north of Scotland, it has been reported.

RAFTyphoonFighterv1© PA RAFTyphoonFighterv1Typhoon jets were launched from RAF Lossiemouth in Moray in order to intercept the aircraft.

The jets were joined by a Voyager refuelling tanker from RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire.

A statement from the RAF said: “Quick reaction alert Typhoon fighters from RAF Lossiemouth, supported by a Voyager Tanker from RAF Brize Norton, have been launched against unidentified aircraft approaching the UK area of interest.

“We will not be offering any additional detail on this ongoing operation until complete.”

The UK Defence Journal claimed the unidentified aircraft were Russian but this has not been confirmed by the RAF.

While not confirmed to be a Russian aircraft, the RAF regularly responds to UK airspace incursions.

Last November, UK aircraft intercepted Russian nuclear bombers over the North Sea.

Two Russian Tu-160 ‘White Swan’ bombers entered ‘the UK area of interest’ at the time.

They approached Dutch airspace before being intercepted and escorted by RAF jets.
