Bartenders decry continued mistreatment, advocate for remunerations of working conditions.

Najjera, Wakiso-Uganda: Bar workers united under Bartenders Association Uganda (BAU) cling to the government for its intervention in setting standards for the creation of favorable atmosphere under which they should work.

While addressing a press conference at the Grill hotel in Najjera-a bedroom community for Kampala City, Waisswa Amos, the President of the Association informed that they are pushing for legal recognition of bartenders in order to straighten their operations.

In this, Waiswa pointed that its time they compelling bar owner/bosses to offer appointment letters to their workers, well laid payment standards, contracts of work and others.

He called on all members of the Association and all in the night industry to develop a spirit of saving with a great lesson from the recent two year lockdown which none expected and no one cared.

Baguma Justus Bagarukayo, the secretary General of the Association expressed his dissatisfaction on how some bartenders are mistreated yet they perform a great role in their docket.

Baguma noted that, Bartenders work utmost 12 hours and above but they earn little salaries in addition to mistreatment of many kinds by their bosses. He added, its then better for us to work well knowing the possible consequences and how we can battle them.

In the same press conference was Ruthiana Namukisa the Vice President of the Association, pointed that ladies in this industry are the most affected considering the risks that come alongside their gender.

Namukisa called on ladies to value themselves while executing their duties because the effects of such abuse on them may be cumbersome.

She also encouraged all members of the association to save with the Bartenders SACCO as this may save them in hard times. It’s on this point that she asked government, individuals and brewery companies to extend support to them having gone through a lot in the tough lockdown.

Currently night industry is ranked third in the avenues that remit taxes to Uganda Revenue Authority and employs a number of Ugandans.

Uganda has about 28.000 countrywide.
