Maryhill High School Wins 2025 National Science Innovation Projects Competition

Science Students of Mary Hill High school went back home smiling from the bottom of their hearts after they emerged the overall winners of the National Science Innovation projects competition organized by the Uganda Professional Science Teachers’ Union held on August 23, 2025.

Mary Hill High school through its innovation project entitled  smart Health care managed to scored 80.7%, followed by Ntare school with 77.6% Comprehensive waste management machine, Kakira SS 76.9% -bicycle sprayer, Soroti SS 75%-assistive listening device. Ambrose Okello and Desire Wambi emerged the best exhibitors in national science Innovation projects competition.

 

 

Besides Mary Hill students winning prizes, the school was awarded a dummy cheque worth Shs500,000 in appreciation for its outstanding performance in grand finals.

 

A team of six adjudicators led by Dr. Tom Omute, a lecturer at Lira University presided over the adjudication ceremony to determine the best innovative projects and the schools behind them.

 

 

Upon announcing the 2025 winners, Dr. Omute observed that there is need to dignify the teaching profession, fix the funding gap and to provide a platform for learners to demonstrate their skills and abilities.

 

Hon. Abdul Byakatonda, the workers MP, who was the Chief Guest, pledged to lobby for a room at the Ministry of Education particularly for science and innovation. He asked schools to embrace the private public partnership arguing that it’s the only way schools can move to greater heights.

 

The former Chairperson of Amalgamated Workers’ Union , Usher Wilson Owere, pledged to support science and innovation in schools.

 

Dr. Milton Turyamureba, a lecturer of Accounting and Finance at Kyambogo University, noted that innovation drives self-employment and called for more funding to the education sector adding that money which is given to musicians should be given to science and innovation in schools.

 

 

The General Secretary Uganda professional science Teachers’ Union, Dr. Aron Mugaiga, emphasized that the competition is aimed at helping learners to showcase their skills and creativity.

 

“We want students to use these skills to solve society problems. We don’t want them to do science and just remain in the Laboratory,” he says adding that, “For decades science teachers have taught science theoretically and done several experiments in the laboratory but unfortunately these experiments have been remaining there.  So, today we want to show the public what we do in the Lab and the skills the students have obtained in their respective schools It’s a platform for students to compete with others.”
