Electoral Commission Opens Nominations for Uganda’s 2026 General Elections

Kampala | Uganda – The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially kicked off the road to Uganda’s 2026 general elections by opening the nomination process for all categories of political candidates, including those vying for the presidency.

Starting August 11 to August 24, presidential aspirants will be able to collect supporter forms, official nomination forms, and detailed nomination guidelines, according to EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi.

“The supporter forms will enable aspirants to collect signatures from at least 100 registered voters in at least two-thirds of Uganda’s districts, equivalent to 98 districts, as required by electoral law,” Mucunguzi explained in a statement.
“These supporters must be registered voters in the districts where they endorse a candidate.”

The nomination forms are designed to capture the personal and political particulars of each candidate, while the accompanying guidelines clearly outline the legal requirements for a valid nomination.

For those eyeing parliamentary seats, including special interest group representatives, forms and guidelines are now available for download on the EC website: www.ec.or.ug.

Aspirants contesting for district and city chairperson positions can also access their nomination materials online. However, candidates for local government councillor positions will obtain their forms directly from EC district offices.

Mucunguzi urged all political hopefuls to carefully review the nomination guidelines to ensure full compliance and avoid potential disqualification.

In a related update, the EC announced a change in the parliamentary nomination dates, which have been moved from September to October 15 and 16. All other nomination timelines remain unchanged.

With the nomination window now open, Uganda’s political stage is set, as contenders across the nation begin their journey toward the 2026 general elections.
