UNEB Dismisses Reports of Setting Mock Exams for Schools

UNEB Dismisses Reports of Setting Mock Exams for Schools.

The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has dismissed media reports that it is setting mock examinations for schools.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Board Executive Director, Dan Odongo, clarified that it is only conducting pretests in selected schools as part of its quality assurance process for competency-based assessment tools, and not mock exams as was erroneously reported.

“The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) wishes to clarify that it will not be setting ‘mock’ examinations for schools as was erroneously reported in the media, in a story headed UNEB to start setting mock exams. We have noted that in the story, the terms “pre-tests” and “mock” exams were interchangeably used as if they mean the same thing. It is true UNEB is currently carrying out pre-tests in sampled schools as part of its quality assurance for items to be used for the Competency-Based Assessment,” the statement reads.

Odongo felt it necessary to reiterate that it’s not UNEB’s mandate to mock exams.

“This is, therefore, to inform schools and all concerned stakeholders that it is not the mandate of UNEB to set “mock’ examinations prior to the end of cycle examinations. UNEB does not and will not set “mock” exams for schools.”

Mock exams are practice tests administered to students before their official final exams, which include PLE, UCE, and UACE that are set and marked by UNEB.

Mocks are designed to simulate the actual exam environment, helping students assess their knowledge, time management, and exam-taking strategies.

However, even before the rollout of the newly designed Competency-Based Assessment, UNEB was not setting mocks for schools.
