WAKISO, UGANDA | 8 JULY 2025 – President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has today officially commissioned the construction of the long-awaited Bukasa–Ssentema, Kakiri Road , a 12.7-kilometer infrastructure project that is expected to boost connectivity and development in Wakiso District.

The road, which is projected to cost UGX 56 billion, is being constructed by China Chongqing International Construction Corporation (CICO), a reputable Chinese engineering firm known for its experience in road infrastructure projects across the country. According to officials from the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA), the project is scheduled for completion by October 2026.

Once completed, the Bukasa-Ssentema-Kakiri Road is expected to improve accessibility between the rural communities of Bukasa and Kakiri, reduce travel time, and facilitate the movement of goods and services. The road also links key agricultural zones to urban markets, which is seen as a step forward in stimulating rural development and wealth creation in the area.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, President Museveni emphasized the importance of road infrastructure in achieving Uganda’s socio-economic transformation under the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government.

“Roads are a foundation for development. When we open up rural areas and connect them to markets, we empower our people to create wealth,” the president said.

In a gesture of goodwill and support to the local community, President Museveni pledged UGX 300 million to support the construction and development needs of St. Kizito Catholic Church Bukasa and 300 million to the nearby Anglican Church. The donation has been warmly welcomed by church and local leaders who turned up in large number’s.

In addition, the President has also offered UGX 6 million to the LC1 Chairman of Bukasa Village to enable him purchase a motorcycle (boda boda), aimed at easing his transportation and enhancing service delivery within the community.

Residents of Bukasa and the surrounding areas have expressed excitement over the launch of the road project and the President’s donations. Many have noted that the road has long been in a poor state, especially during rainy seasons, hampering transport and business.

“This road has been a major challenge. We are happy that the government has finally listened to our cries,” said Agnes Namagembe, a resident of Ssentema.

The commissioning of the Bukasa–Ssentema–Kakiri Road adds to a growing list of road infrastructure projects being undertaken by the government across the country, as part of its wider agenda under Vision 2040 and the National Development Plan III (NDPIII). These projects aim to enhance Uganda’s competitiveness, reduce poverty, and support inclusive growth.
