One Dead, Six Injured as Party Van Crashes in Mpigi

A tragic accident in Mpigi District has left one person dead and six others injured after a party van lost control and crashed. The van, registration number UBM 672G, had earlier been flagged for reckless driving.

According to eyewitnesses, the van was speeding and swerving between lanes before it veered off the road and overturned. The accident occurred along the Kampala–Masaka highway, a route notorious for traffic mishaps.

Police from the Mpigi Traffic Department confirmed that the vehicle was carrying partygoers returning from a weekend celebration. Loud music and flashing lights were reportedly observed moments before the crash.

One of the passengers died on the spot, while the injured were rushed to Gombe Hospital for medical attention. Among them, two are reported to be in critical condition.

Authorities noted that the van driver ignored multiple warnings from other motorists and traffic officers. “We had received several reports of reckless driving,” said ASP Lydia Nandudu, the district traffic commander.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about road safety, especially involving party vans and private transport vehicles operating as mobile entertainment spots.

Police have since impounded the wrecked van and launched investigations into its ownership and licensing. Preliminary findings suggest the van lacked basic safety features.

Local leaders are urging stricter enforcement of traffic laws and routine checks on modified party vehicles. “This tragedy could have been avoided,” said area MP Joseph Ssenyonga.

The body of the deceased was taken to the Gombe Hospital mortuary for postmortem as families await further updates.
