The New York City mayor-elect, Zohran Mamdani, announced a transition team to help enact what he called the city’s most ambitious policy platform in a generation. Right after his mayoral race win, Mamdani vowed to get right to work as he prepares to take office on January 1.

While addressing a morning press conference in Queens, the 34-year-old Democratic socialists revealed an all-female transition team led by Elana Leopold as executive director. The team also included co-chairs Maria Torres-Springer, the former first deputy mayor; Lina Khan, the former Federal Trade Commission Chair; the United Way’s president and CEO, Grace Bonilla; and the former deputy mayor for health and human services, Melanie Hartzog.

“In the coming months, my team and I will build a city hall capable of delivering on the promises of this campaign,” Mamdani told reporters on Wednesday. “We will form an administration that is equal parts capable and compassionate, driven by integrity and willing to work just as hard as the millions of New Yorkers who call this city home.”

Many pointed to the selection of Khan, who gained national prominence for her aggressive antitrust enforcement at the FTC under former US President Joe Biden. She has been popular among both progressives and populist Republicans, signalling that Mamdani plans to bring bold reformers into his administration as he prepares to lead the nation’s largest city.

‘Together we made history’: Zohran Mamdani hails ‘historic’ win as New York City mayor

The clean sweep among several ballots nationwide on Tuesday has boosted morale among Democrats bruised by Trump’s return to the White House and has set alarm bells ringing among Republican circles.

“Thank you, New York City. Together we made history. Now let’s get to work,” newly elected Mayor Zohran Mamdani posted on X, moments after clinching a landmark victory that made him the city’s first Muslim and youngest mayor in more than a century.

His triumph capped a sweeping night for Democrats, who also won two key governor races,  a result seen as both a morale boost for the party and an early warning to President Donald Trump ahead of the 2026 midterms.

Mamdani, 34, is the city’s first Muslim mayor and the youngest to serve in more than a century.

The Democratic socialist’s victory came in the face of fierce attacks on his policies and his Muslim heritage from business elites, conservative media commentators and Trump himself.

“If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him,” Mamdani said in a victory speech to supporters.
