The 10th Edition of the Africa Aquatics Zone III Swimming Championships, held at the Kasarani Aquatic Centre in Nairobi from October 16–19, 2025, delivered countless memorable moments but none quite like the spirited sibling rivalry between Ugandan brothers Dunstan and Donald Rukare.
Both seasoned Masters swimmers representing Team Uganda, the Rukare brothers turned their participation into one of the event’s most heartwarming storylines — a blend of family pride, competitiveness, and sporting joy that captivated spectators and fellow athletes alike.
Competing in separate divisions Dunstan in the Men’s 45–49 category and Donald in the Men’s 55–59 the brothers found themselves entered in the same three sprint events: the 50m breaststroke, 50m butterfly, and 50m freestyle.
Their parallel entries quickly caught attention, and what began as friendly family banter evolved into one of the championship’s most-followed subplots.
In the 50m breaststroke, Dunstan combined power and rhythm to clock 45.49 seconds, earning silver in his category. Donald followed closely with a time of 50.70 seconds, also taking silver in his age group. Dunstan’s faster time gave him the early family lead 1–0.
The 50m butterfly produced fireworks. Donald Rukare exploded off the blocks and maintained a commanding lead, but Dunstan Rukare mounted a thrilling late charge.
The two touched the wall almost simultaneously — Donald edging it by just 0.07 seconds with 43.93 seconds for gold, while Dunstan clocked 44.00 seconds to earn bronze. The crowd erupted in applause as the sibling rivalry leveled at 1–1.
The decisive race came in the 50m freestyle, a pure test of speed. Dunstan, eager to reclaim bragging rights, produced a sharp start and flawless stroke rhythm, finishing in 35.57 seconds to claim bronze in his division.
Donald followed with 36.43 seconds, earning silver in his age group giving Dunstan the overall family edge, 2–1.
