KAMPALA, — After a decade away from frontline politics, former Attorney General Fred Ruhindi has made a return, officially nominated to contest the Nakawa East parliamentary seat in the upcoming 2026 elections.
Ruhindi, who previously represented the undivided Nakawa Constituency, received his nomination certificate at the Electoral Commission offices, accompanied by a throng of supporters, party officials, and well-wishers eager to witness his return to active politics.
“I am humbled to serve the people of Nakawa East once again,” Ruhindi told journalists. “This time, I promise to offer clean, transparent, and corruption-free leadership. Our focus will be on listening to the people and delivering real results.”
Nakawa East, carved out of the former Nakawa Constituency, is known for its politically engaged electorate, bustling commercial hubs, and diverse communities. Over the years, it has produced competitive parliamentary races, making it one of Kampala’s most closely watched constituencies during elections.
Ruhindi’s entry into the race sets the stage for a high-profile contest. He will face off against Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and Winifred Nakandi, both of whom have maintained strong grassroots networks in the area.
During his nomination, Ruhindi emphasized that his campaign will focus on accountability, transparency, and responsive governance. He stressed the importance of tackling pressing issues in Nakawa East, including infrastructure development, youth employment, and access to social services.
“Politics should be about service, not personal gain,” he said. “I am committed to ensuring that every decision I make benefits the people who have entrusted me with their votes.”
Ruhindi also called for a peaceful and issue-based campaign period, urging all candidates to engage respectfully and avoid actions that could inflame tensions in the constituency.
With Ruhindi’s return, the constituency now has a blend of experience, credibility, and fresh competition, which analysts say will make the upcoming election both dynamic and unpredictable.
“I am ready for the challenge,” Ruhindi concluded. “Nakawa East deserves leaders who are accountable, transparent, and committed to real development. I am here to serve, and I believe the people will support that vision.”
