President Museveni, who has led Uganda since 1986, was accompanied by senior government officials, ministers, and party leaders as he was formally cleared to appear on the ballot once again under the NRM ticket. His nomination marks his continued bid to extend his leadership into a new term.

Kasibante Robert of the National Peasants Party became the second aspirant to be successfully nominated. His candidacy, while representing a smaller party, brings diversity to the race and demonstrates the EC’s commitment to ensuring inclusivity in Uganda’s democratic process.

The third aspirant to be nominated was Mabirizi Joseph of the Conservative Party, who has been vocal about governance reforms and constitutionalism. His clearance by the EC adds further competition to what is expected to be a highly contested election.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission announced that the nomination exercise will continue tomorrow, Wednesday, with two more high-profile aspirants expected to appear before the commission. These are Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) candidate Nandala Madani Mafabi and Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, who is representing the National Unity Platform (NUP).

The EC Chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama, reaffirmed the commission’s readiness to conduct a transparent and credible electoral process. He urged aspirants and their supporters to observe the law and maintain peace during and after the nomination exercise.

The nomination period runs for two days, after which the final list of candidates for the January 2026 presidential elections will be officially gazetted.
