The Electoral Commission (EC) has confirmed that 11 aspirants seeking to contest in the 2026 General Election have so far submitted their supporter lists, fulfilling a key requirement in the nomination process for presidential candidates.

According to EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi, the submissions were made between the beginning of the week and Wednesday, September 10, 2025. Out of the 11 aspirants, five are sponsored by political parties, while six are independents.

“The political parties that have so far submitted supporter lists are the Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC), Conservative Party, Common Man’s Party, National Unity Platform (NUP), and Uganda Patriotic Movement,” Mucunguzi revealed.

Under the Presidential Elections Act, every aspirant is required to present lists of supporters endorsed by at least 100 registered voters from a minimum of two-thirds of Uganda’s districts. The measure is designed to ensure that only serious contenders with broad national appeal appear on the ballot.

“These lists are returned to enable the Commission to verify each supporter. We must confirm that they are registered voters, that they are Ugandans, and that no supporter has appended their signature to more than one aspirant,” Mucunguzi explained.

He further noted that all aspirants were advised to submit their forms at least two weeks before nomination day to give EC staff ample time for verification.

The nomination of presidential candidates will take place on September 23–24, 2025 at the new EC headquarters in Rubaga, Sabagabo Municipality, Wakiso District.

Mucunguzi also said the process of receiving supporter lists is ongoing at the Commission’s offices on 7th Street Industrial Area, Kampala, every weekday between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

The submission of supporter lists is a major milestone in the electoral roadmap as political parties and independent aspirants intensify preparations for the campaign season. Once verified, successful aspirants will be cleared for nomination later this month, setting the stage for what is expected to be a highly competitive presidential race.
