Electoral Commission Commences Nominations for City Division Leaders and Councillors

BY NAOME NAMUSOKE/KMA UPDATES

The Electoral Commission (EC) has today commenced the nomination exercise for candidates aspiring to contest as city division chairpersons and councilors, including special interest group councilors at the municipality and city division levels.

According to the Commission’s Public Relations Officer, Julius Mucunguzi, the nominations will run from 8th to 10th September and will be conducted across all divisions in Kampala as well as other districts across the country.

Mucunguzi has emphasized that aspirants must ensure they meet all requirements before presenting themselves for nomination. Key among these is having the correct particulars, presenting 20 registered voters as supporters, and paying the necessary nomination fees.

The EC also stressed the importance of accuracy in National Identification Numbers (NINs) submitted by supporters. This comes after several irregularities were detected last week, where some contestants presented supporters with incorrect NIN details.

“The Commission urges all aspirants to cross-check their documents carefully before submission. Any errors could affect the validity of their nominations,” Mucunguzi noted.

In addition, the EC has appealed to candidates and their supporters to conduct themselves peacefully and to respect the law and Commission guidelines throughout the process.

Mucunguzi has further reminded aspirants that the nomination exercise does not require processions or rallies, urging them to refrain from such gatherings in order to maintain order and compliance with electoral regulations.

The nomination exercise marks a critical step in the country’s electoral calendar as the Commission moves closer to organizing the forthcoming local government elections.
