As Lubaga Cathedral nears its centenary celebration, weekly community donations and engineering oversight are driving critical renovations to preserve the landmark’s spiritual and cultural legacy.
The iconic Lubaga Cathedral is undergoing extensive renovations in preparation for its 100-year anniversary, with the campaign steadily gaining momentum through parishioner support and public contributions.
On September 3, 2025, the fundraising drive raised Shs4,290,000, adding to the growing pool of resources for the project.
The renovation, which began in August, includes both structural and aesthetic upgrades to strengthen and beautify the cathedral.
Consultant Supervising Engineer Dr. Fred Kiwanuka and Clerk of Works Mr. Hamfred Bukutu Wasajja led donors on a tour of the site, showcasing the progress and challenges faced.
“We started at the beginning of July. Due to limited time, we have made a crash program and God willing, we shall reach the goal to see this done three weeks before the final event,” Dr. Kiwanuka explained.
He noted that the project has encountered difficulties, including material shortages, bad weather, and limited storage space, but assured that the work is already 50 percent complete.
Prominent among the contributors was Hon. Hajjat Nambi, Chairperson of the NRM Flag Bearers for Kampala and Wakiso District, who donated Shs1 million and pledged more support.
“I am a hajjat amongst sisters and brothers at Lubaga Cathedral. When I heard about Rubaga making 100 years, I had to offer support and call upon all NRM flag bearers and our prime minister to inform the president to provide such to the Catholic fraternity,” she said.
Weekly donation drives, held every Wednesday, have become central to the fundraising effort, attracting parishioners, civic leaders, and well-wishers.
Organizers report an encouraging rise in contributions as the centenary draws closer.
The next drive is scheduled for Wednesday, September 10, with appeals extended to individuals, institutions, and corporate partners to help complete the renovations in time.
