Kampala, Uganda: Kampala Metropolitan Police have confirmed the arrest of Comrade Ssetuba Derrick, a National Unity Platform (NUP) parliamentary hopeful for Buyaga East, over allegations of fraud amounting to UGX 8 million.

ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Police Spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan, revealed Ssetuba was picked up by officers attached to Kabalagala Police Station in what he insists was a lawful operation, not an abduction, as some social media reports had claimed.

“Contrary to social media reports that the suspect was abducted, he was lawfully arrested and is currently detained at Kabalagala Police Station,” Owoyesigyire clarified.

The allegations, according to the KMP, stem from a complaint lodged by Namara Omuhereza, who accuses Ssetuba of obtaining the funds by false pretenses. Since his arrest, two more alleged victims have stepped forward with similar claims.

Owoyesigyire says the matter will be forwarded to the Office of the Resident State Attorney (RSA) for review and advice once investigations conclude in the case.

Ssetuba, a vocal opposition figure and NUP ticket holder, had been actively mobilising in Buyaga East ahead of the 2026 polls.

His continued detention has triggered heated online exchanges between government supporters and NUP loyalists, with the latter alleging political persecution, a claim police have sidestepped, insisting the case is purely criminal.
