EC Revises Nomination Dates For 2026 General Elections

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced revised dates for the nomination of candidates in the upcoming 2025/2026 General Elections, affecting Parliamentary, Local Government, and Presidential nomination activities.

In a press briefing held on Thursday, EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi said the adjustments were necessary to improve the administration of the electoral roadmap and ensure a smoother nomination process across various levels of leadership.

New Nomination Dates for Local Government Elections

Initially set for 3rd to 12th September 2025, the nomination period for Local Government Council elections—including Special Interest Groups such as Youths, Persons with Disabilities, and Older Persons—has been broken down by levels and rescheduled as follows:

  • District/City (Chairpersons, Lord Mayor, and Councillors):
    3rd – 5th September 2025
  • Municipality/City Division (Chairpersons and Councillors):
    8th – 10th September 2025
  • Sub-County/Town/Municipal Divisions (Chairpersons and Councillors):
    11th – 24th September 2025 (excluding weekends)

Nomination forms for these positions will be available for collection at the respective District/City Electoral Commission offices starting Monday, 11th August 2025. District Chairperson nomination forms will also be accessible on the EC website (www.ec.or.ug).

Parliamentary Nomination Moved to October

The nomination for Parliamentary candidates—also including Special Interest Groups—has been pushed from mid-September to:

  • 15th – 16th October 2025
Nominations will be conducted at the office of each respective District/City Returning Officer.

Forms and guidelines for parliamentary nominations will be downloadable from the EC website beginning 11th August 2025.

Presidential Nomination Forms Available from August 11

In preparation for the 2026 Presidential Election, the EC has opened the period from 11th August to 24th September 2025 for presidential aspirants to collect:

  • Nomination forms
  • Supporter forms (requiring signatures from at least 100 registered voters in two-thirds of Uganda’s districts)
  • Nomination guidelines

These materials must be collected physically from the EC Head Office in Kampala (7th Street, Industrial Area) between 8:00am and 5:00pm on weekdays. Aspirants collecting forms on behalf of political parties must present written authorization from the party’s Secretary General. Independent aspirants must present proof of voter registration.

Call to Action

The EC urged all stakeholders, including voters, political parties, and aspiring candidates, to take note of the revised schedule and participate actively in line with the established guidelines.

“We particularly appreciate the participation of Special Interest Groups in the ongoing elections from village to national level,” said Justice Byabakama. “Let us all continue to support a free, fair, and peaceful electoral process.”
