Illegal Firearm Recovered in Lamwo, Two Suspects Arrested at Uganda–South Sudan Border.

 

Lamwo District, Uganda – Security forces have arrested two individuals and recovered an illegal firearm during a joint operation conducted by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and the Uganda Police Force.

The arrest occurred at approximately 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 1, 2025, at Waligo Checkpoint in Lamwo District, as the suspects attempted to cross into South Sudan.

According to Captain Edrin Mawanda, the Public Information Officer (PIO) of the 5th Infantry Division, the primary suspect has been identified as Okunga Isaac, a 27-year-old resident of Akor Village, Adoko Kome Parish in Lira District. He was found in possession of an illegal submachine gun (SMG) with serial number 25456, along with a magazine containing five rounds of ammunition.

Capt. Mawanda further explained that Okunga was traveling on a red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, registration number UEY 428G, which was being ridden by Lokoroma Gabriel, a resident of Pobel Village, Lamwo Town Council. Both men were immediately taken into custody.

The suspects are currently being held at the Bravo Battalion Headquarters in Ngomoromo, pending transfer to the Uganda Police for further investigation and legal action.

Lieutenant Colonel Mubangizi Ipolito, Brigade Commander of the 1st DUMISHA Brigade, warned that individuals found in illegal possession of firearms will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. He commended the joint security forces for their vigilance and urged them to remain alert in safeguarding the border.

The ongoing joint operations continue to register significant progress in disrupting criminal activity and promoting peace and stability along the Uganda–South Sudan border.
