Town Clerks Strategize to Improve Markets

Kampala-Uganda-Local Government Urges Better Infrastructure and Services in Urban Markets. Town clerks from urban authorities overseeing the Markets and Agricultural Trade Improvement Program (MATIP) markets have convened to develop strategies aimed at enhancing the services offered in markets across the country.

During a meeting held at the Ministry of Local Government headquarters, the Permanent Secretary, Ben Kumumanya, urged the town clerks to focus on improving infrastructure and ensuring the availability of essential amenities such as water and electricity in the markets.

“This will attract more vendors and boost revenue collection from the markets,” Kumumanya stated, emphasizing that better facilities would not only improve the vendors’ experience but also strengthen the financial sustainability of market operations.

He further encouraged the town clerks to enforce the implementation of the Markets Act, particularly the clause that removes private landlords from operating in government-owned markets. This provision is intended to enhance transparency and improve the management of public markets.

Kumumanya praised the efforts of Gulu and Arua Cities, highlighting their achievements in market organization and revenue performance. Gulu was recognized for successfully restoring trade order, while Arua stood out for its exemplary increase in market revenue.

Arua City’s Town Clerk, Mr. David Kyasanku, credited the city’s success to enhanced amenities in Arua Central Market. He pointed to the provision of reliable water and electricity services, along with the acquisition of garbage trucks that ensure daily waste collection, as key contributors to the city’s improved revenue generation.

The Ministry of Local Government continues to support urban authorities through MATIP and remains committed to promoting efficient, clean, and well-managed markets across Uganda.
