According to the World Report of 2023, tourism has significantly contributed to the global economy, generating approximately $9.9 trillion. However, in Uganda, tourism remains underutilized, accounting for only 4% of the national GDP, a figure that has raised concerns among stakeholders.

In response to this, the Buganda Heritage Tourism Board has launched the 2025/26 Miss Tourism Buganda Kingdom campaign in a bid to boost tourism within the Kingdom and Uganda at large. The launch event took place at Buganda Royal University and was officiated by Owek. Anthony Wamala, the Minister of Culture in Buganda.

Speaking at the event, Owek. Wamala emphasized that the Buganda Kingdom has long sought ways to generate revenue from its rich cultural heritage through tourism. He noted that cultural tourism remains an untapped goldmine that could greatly benefit the kingdom and the country.

Najib Nsubuga, the head of the Buganda Heritage Tourism Board, called upon the public to embrace and support tourism, particularly within the Buganda region. He stressed that increased interest in cultural tourism would lead to significant development and economic growth.

The highlight of the event was the official launch of the 5th annual Miss Tourism Buganda Kingdom campaign. This annual beauty pageant is aimed at promoting cultural heritage, attracting tourists, and fostering national pride. The theme for this year’s campaign underscores the importance of cultural leadership and identity.

With this initiative, the Buganda Heritage Tourism Board hopes to elevate Buganda’s cultural landmarks and traditions to the global stage, making the region a key player in Uganda’s tourism industry.
