WASHINGTON: The United States of America (USA) has revoked the legal status of more than 500,000 immigrants, requiring them to leave the country within weeks.
The decision is consistent with President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown, which is aimed specifically at stopping migration from Latin America.
The order affects about 532,000 Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans who entered the United States under a temporary program launched by former President Joe Biden in October 2022 and expanded in early 2023.
The affected individuals must leave by April 24 unless they obtain another legal status that would allow them to stay. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the policy was always intended to be temporary.
The agency reiterated that the humanitarian parole program does not grant permanent residence or lead to citizenship. Welcome.US, a group that helps immigrants, urged those affected by the order to seek legal guidance immediately.
Trump has vowed to implement the largest deportation effort in U.S. history. His administration has already taken aggressive action, including sending more than 200 alleged gang members to El Salvador under a wartime special measure.
