Rising Education Costs in Uganda Hinder Professional Development Despite Government Loan Scheme

During the 15th graduation ceremony of Clarke International University, the Vice Chancellor, Rose Clarke Nanyonga, made an appeal to the government to expand opportunities under the Student Loan Scheme. She noted that the scheme currently favors universities with charters, leaving out those without charters despite the rising cost of education, especially in science courses.

“The cost of education continues to rise, particularly with science-based courses. We urge the government to expand the Student Loan Scheme to include universities without charters, as many students from these institutions are equally in need of financial support.”

Justice Christopher Izama Madrama, has emphasized the transformative power of education as a key driver of Uganda’s economic growth.

“Education is not just about personal advancement; it is a transformative force for our entire economy. Equipping graduates with the necessary skills will empower them to make a significant impact on Uganda’s development.”

In his remarks, the State Minister of Higher Education, John Chrysestom Muyingo, encouraged the graduates to focus on creating jobs rather than solely seeking employment. He stressed that empowering communities through job creation will foster economic growth.

“Graduates must be proactive in creating job opportunities rather than just seeking jobs. By doing so, they will not only uplift their communities but also drive Uganda’s economic transformation.”

Muyingo, while reading the Vice President’s speech, also underscored the importance of innovation in Uganda’s economic agenda, urging graduates to put innovation at the forefront to enable Ugandan businesses to compete globally.

Over 456 students graduated from Clarke International University, with some specializing in medicine and business studies. As they embark on their professional journeys, the call for more inclusive financial support and innovative thinking remains crucial for their success and Uganda’s economic future.
