Empowering Women through Collaboration: Uganda and Türkiye Governments Launch Bicycle Race Initiative
The Ugandan government, in partnership with the government of Türkiye, has today launched a groundbreaking initiative aimed at empowering women in Uganda, starting with the West Nile region. This impactful project, led by the Keskul International Organization, has been officially inaugurated through the African Women Support Projects 2025 bicycle race.
Speaking at the launch, the President of Keskul International Organization stressed the importance of empowering women as a fundamental step toward sustainable development.
“A lot still needs to be done to uplift women economically and socially. That is why we have started this new program in Uganda. We believe that through mobility and empowerment initiatives like this, we can transform lives,” he remarked.
As part of this initiative, more than 100 bicycles have been donated to women from the West Nile region to promote mobility, economic participation, and empowerment.
Hon. Avako Melsa Naima Gule, Woman Member of Parliament for Yumbe District, expressed her heartfelt appreciation to both the Ugandan and Türkiye governments for prioritizing women’s empowerment.
“I am grateful to both governments for putting women at the forefront by enabling them to participate in this bicycle race. This gesture shows a commitment to women’s inclusion and mobility,” Hon. Gule stated.
The Ugandan Ambassador to Türkiye, speaking during the event, highlighted the robust partnership between the two nations. He noted that their collaborative efforts have so far resulted in the successful completion of 97 projects, signifying remarkable growth and development.
“Our strong bilateral relations continue to yield positive results. These 97 completed projects are a testament to our commitment to progress and shared values,” the Ambassador emphasized.
Leru Huda, the State Minister for Defence, acknowledged that bicycles are the primary mode of transport in Yumbe District. He praised the project for supporting over 3,000 women, which is expected to ease trade between Uganda and South Sudan, given Yumbe’s proximity to the border.
“Bicycles are more than just a means of transport here—they are essential for daily life and trade. Supporting over 3,000 women will significantly enhance trade between Uganda and South Sudan, promoting economic growth and community cohesion,” Minister Huda noted.
The Guest of Honor, Rt. Hon. Lumumba Kasule from the Office of the Prime Minister, expressed the government’s continued commitment to women’s empowerment. She further announced that the government has provided over 5 million Ugandan shillings in addition to the bicycles to further boost the economic capabilities of women, particularly during the harvest season.
“These bicycles will enable women to transport their produce efficiently during the harvesting period, which is crucial for boosting household incomes. The financial support we have extended will ensure sustainable empowerment,” Rt. Hon. Kasule said.
The launch of the African Women Support Projects 2025 marks a pivotal moment in empowering women through practical support and strategic collaborations. With enhanced mobility and government backing, women in West Nile are poised to experience a positive transformation in both their economic and social lives.
