“It Won’t Happen Again,” Gen Muhoozi Apologizes for Attacks on Journalists During Kawempe By-Election.

Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has issued an apology following reports that journalists were attacked during the chaotic Kawempe North by-election.

In a statement on X, Muhoozi expressed regret that members of the media, including Francis Isano and journalists from Salt TV, were caught in the violence.

“I’m personally sorry that our friends Francis Isano and the journalists at Salt TV Uganda were caught up in the fracas. It’s most unfortunate. I think it was a case of friendly fire. It will not happen again,” Muhoozi wrote.

His apology follows growing criticism from media rights groups and opposition figures who accused security forces of targeting journalists covering the tense by-election.

Reports indicate that several journalists sustained injuries, with some alleging excessive force by security personnel

While Muhoozi described the incident as friendly fire, his statement has sparked mixed reactions.

The Uganda Journalists Association (UJA) has called for an independent investigation into the attacks, insisting that press freedom must be upheld.

Meanwhile, human rights activists have urged security forces to exercise restraint when handling political events.
