Girls outperform boys
The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has officially released the 2024 Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) results.
The results were released on Friday, March 14th by the Minister of Education Janet Museveni at Nakasero State Lodge.
According to UNEB Chairman Prof. Celestine Obua, the 2024 exams saw a near-exponential increase in the number of candidates, with 142,000 students sitting for the exams, compared to 110,566 candidates in 2023.
This increase represents a 28.4% rise in the number of candidates, reflecting the growing interest in advanced education across the country.
Positive Trends in Candidature and Subject Choices
The 2024 UACE results show a continuing positive trend in the number of candidates participating in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects.
Despite still being outnumbered by students pursuing humanities, the number of students choosing STEM subjects has been steadily increasing.
Prof. Obua urged for this trend to continue, stating that “deliberate efforts must be made to increase the number of students offering mathematics and science subjects to create the pool from which tertiary institutions can select students for science programs.”

Girls Outperform Boys in UACE 2024

In terms of academic performance, female candidates once again outperformed their male counterparts, continuing a trend seen in previous years.
At the three principal pass level, 43.7% of female candidates achieved this result compared to 34% of male candidates.
At the two principal pass level, which qualifies students for university admission, 71.2% of females passed compared to 61.1% of males.
Even at the one principal pass level, females again led with 89.2% passing, compared to 84% of male candidates.
UNEB also reported that the number of students who did not report for exams has continued to decrease, indicating a positive shift in student commitment to their education.
Furthermore, the 2024 UACE exams recorded the least number of examination malpractice compared to other previous national exams, such as the Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) and Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE).
As a result, very few results were withheld, a sign of improved examination integrity.

Looking Ahead to University Admissions

The results also revealed that 38.6% of candidates passed with all three principal passes, slightly up from 41% in 2023.
With two principal passes being the minimum requirement for university admission, 92,273 students qualify for university placement this year.
The upward trend in female performance underscores the growing empowerment of young women in Uganda’s education system, as they continue to excel despite being fewer in number than their male peers.
The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has officially released the 2024 Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) results, revealing a mixed bag of improvements and challenges across various subjects. There were encouraging results in the performance of students in Economics, Literature in English, Physics, and Biology.

While some subjects saw improvements in student performance, others, particularly in the sciences, experienced notable declines.Pulseug
