Government Announces Commemoration of International Women’s Day 2025

Kampala-Uganda. The government has officially announced the commemoration of International Women’s Day on March 8, 2025. This year’s celebrations will be held at Bukwiri Church of Uganda Primary School in Butemba Town Council, Kyankwanzi District, under the theme “Accelerating Action for Gender Equality.”

According to the 2024 National Population and Housing Census, women make up 51.6% of Uganda’s population. Over the years, Ugandan women have made commendable progress in caregiving services, farming, education, employment, and decision-making. However, significant barriers continue to widen gender gaps, making it difficult to achieve true gender equality.

While addressing the press today at the Media Center, the Minister of State for Gender and Culture Affairs revealed that the government has introduced deliberate interventions to bridge gender disparities and empower women as key contributors to national development.

“Gender equality is not just a fundamental human right, but it is also a cornerstone for building a prosperous, inclusive, and sustainable society,” the minister stated.

The government has implemented several programs to enhance women’s participation in economic activities, including:

Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Programme (UWEP): UGX 116.8 billion disbursed, benefiting over 230,059 women.

Youth Livelihood Programme (YLP): 118,551 young women have accessed funding to boost their enterprisesParish Development Model (PDM) and Grow Project: Over 60,000 women have benefited, significantly boosting the country’s economy.

As Uganda commemorates International Women’s Day, Minister Mutuzo emphasized the government’s commitment to strengthening policy implementation, expanding economic opportunities for women, enhancing social protection measures, eradicating gender-based violence through strict legal enforcement and community engagement, and promoting equal representation of women in leadership and governance structures.

The government urges all stakeholders to join hands in accelerating action towards achieving gender equality and fostering a more inclusive society.
