EAC Calls for Dialogue to End M23 Conflict in DRC
BY: Naomi Namusoke
The East African Community (EAC) member states have urged all governments to engage with the M23 rebel group to find a lasting solution to the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This call has been made today by the 1st Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Affairs, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga.
While addressing key issues within the East African Community, Kadaga highlighted the resolutions made during the recent joint EAC-SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government. Among the decisions taken was the opening of key supply routes, including the Goma-Sake-Bukavu corridor, as well as the immediate reopening of Goma Airport. She also emphasized the need for additional facilitative interventions to ensure stability in the region.
In a move aimed at fostering economic development across EAC member states, Kadaga addressed the issue of a common regional currency. She noted that having a unified currency would ease trade and help prevent currency depreciation across borders. However, she acknowledged that a challenge remains in selecting a host country for the East African Central Bank due to multiple submissions by member states.
“The first thing I did was to secure land for the East African Central Bank. I acquired three acres from the police, so we are very ready for the bank,” Kadaga revealed.
She further suggested that while the establishment of the central bank is in progress, there should be convergence criteria to allow a single regional currency to operate alongside national currencies.
As the EAC continues to push for regional peace and economic integration, the implementation of these resolutions will be key to fostering stability and economic growth in the region.
