2 killed in a Fatal Crash on Lira-Soroti Highway as Fuel Tanker Strikes Motorcycle

LIRA, Uganda – A tragic accident occurred on the Lira-Soroti highway in Boroboro on the 1st of March, 2025, resulting in the death of two people. At around 11:00 AM, a Volvo fuel tanker, registration number CGO 5448AC19/SSD 066N, collided with a motorcycle, registration number UEK 749, a Bajaj Boxer, while it was carrying two passengers.

According to preliminary reports, both the motor vehicle and the motorcycle were traveling from Soroti towards Lira City. As they reached Boroboro, the driver of the fuel tanker attempted to overtake an unidentified vehicle traveling in the same direction.

In the process, the tanker struck the motorcycle, which was being ridden by 26-year-old Otim Bosco. He was carrying 19-year-old Akello Juliet and her 5-month-old baby, Alobo Daniella, who were both residents of Adwila in Lira City East Division.

The impact of the collision caused the immediate death of all three individuals on the motorcycle. Akello Juliet and her infant daughter Alobo Daniella were pronounced dead at the scene, along with the motorcycle rider, Otim Bosco.

Both bodies were conveyed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital Mortuary for postmortem examination. The driver of the Volvo fuel tanker was arrested at the scene and taken into custody at Lira City Central Police Station.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the cause of the accident was careless driving on the part of the fuel tanker driver, who attempted to overtake another vehicle in an unsafe manner. The police investigation into the matter is ongoing, and more details will be provided as the inquiry progresses.

PJ Okema, the Police Public Relations Officer for North Kyoga, urged motorists to exercise caution while driving, especially when overtaking other vehicles
