Betrayal: NUP’s Nyanzi Hands Over Foot Soldiers To Security
In a striking revelation, National Unity Platform (NUP) Secretary for Mobilization, Fred Nyanzi Ssentamu, the elder brother to the party president Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine has admitted to handing over a list of NUP foot soldiers to security agencies.
This shocking move has left many Ugandans reeling, wondering why Nyanzi would betray his own party members.
Appearing on Sanyuka TV’s political show on February 25, 2025, Nyanzi said security agencies asked him to provide the names of foot soldiers who participated in a recent military-like drilling exercise. He complied, giving them the names of all those he had in his custody.
“They [security] asked me to give them names of [foot soldiers] who were in a [military] army, and I gave them all the names I had in my custody,” Nyanzi said to the shock of onlookers.
When questioned whether his actions exposed the foot soldiers to the overzealous security apparatus, Nyanzi denied any wrongdoing, claiming that they had “agreed to expose everyone on camera with the party president”, Bobi.
Nyanzi’s actions have raised eyebrows, especially given his recent disappearance and subsequent reappearance.
After mysteriously vanishing following a military parade at the NUP headquarters, Nyanzi resurfaced near his home, frail, and he was reportedly admitted to a hospital for medical attention. However, he has since made a rapid recovery, after attending mobilization activities over the weekend, a party news conference on Monday, and even appearing on a television show, early Tuesday.
Many Ugandans are now questioning Nyanzi’s fidelity to the NUP beyond rhetoric and his motivations for handing over the list of foot soldiers.
Some have expressed concern that Nyanzi’s actions may have put the foot soldiers in danger, given the security agencies’ history of heavy-handedness.
