Pope Francis Remains in Critical Condition, says Vatican

Rome – Pope Francis remains in critical condition as he continues treatment for double pneumonia at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.

However, the Holy See Press Office reported on Sunday evening that the 87-year-old Pontiff has not experienced further respiratory crises since the previous night, marking a small but significant improvement in his condition.

“The Holy Father remains under close medical supervision,” Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni stated.

“While his condition is serious, there are encouraging signs of stabilization.”

The Pope received two units of concentrated red blood cells, which have positively impacted his hemoglobin levels.

While his thrombocytopenia remains stable, some blood tests indicate early signs of mild renal insufficiency. Medical staff have assured that this issue is currently under control.

High-flow oxygen therapy continues through nasal cannulas to support his breathing. Despite his health challenges, Pope Francis remains alert and well-oriented.

On Sunday morning, he participated in the Holy Mass in his tenth-floor apartment, surrounded by the medical personnel caring for him.

Respiratory Crisis

On Saturday evening, the Vatican released a statement confirming that Pope Francis had suffered an asthma-like respiratory crisis of prolonged intensity that required high-flow oxygen administration.

Blood tests revealed thrombocytopenia linked to anemia, necessitating blood transfusions. Doctors have maintained a cautious outlook, noting that while the Pope is not in immediate danger of death, his condition remains serious, and his prognosis remains guarded.

Dr. Luigi Carbone, Vice-Director of the Vatican’s healthcare service, stated, “His Holiness is receiving the best possible care, and we are monitoring his condition around the clock.”

At a press conference on Friday, Dr. Sergio Alfieri, head of the Pope’s medical team, and Dr. Luigi Carbone addressed reporters about the Pope’s health status.

They reiterated that the Pope is expected to remain hospitalized for at least another week.

While his condition remains delicate, they reassured that he is not attached to a ventilator. However, they acknowledged that the Pope’s breathing difficulties continue to limit his physical activity.

Dr. Alfieri emphasized that one of the primary concerns is the possibility of germs in the Pope’s respiratory tract entering his bloodstream, potentially leading to sepsis.

Despite these risks, he expressed confidence that Pope Francis will eventually be discharged and return to Casa Santa Marta in Vatican City. However, his chronic respiratory issues will persist, requiring ongoing medical management.

“The Holy Father continues to demonstrate remarkable resilience,” Dr. Alfieri said. “We remain hopeful that his recovery will progress steadily, though it will take time.”
