Parliament’s Appointments Committee Vets New Deputy Chief Justice, Judges
The Appointments Committee of Parliament chaired by the Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has vetted the newly appointed Deputy Chief Justice and other judges on Monday.
Over the weekend, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni appointed Justice Flavian Zeija as the new Deputy Chief Justice, replacing Justice Richard Buteera, who is set to retire in May 2025.

Other appointments include; Justice Muzamil Mutangula Kibeedi to the Supreme Court, eight new Justices to the Court of Appeal, and 21 acting Judges to the High Court.
Speaking to the Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi, who also sits on the Appointments Committee, he expressed concern over one of the appointees, that is; Justice Simon Peter Kinobe whom he described him as a politician, arguing that political figures should be excluded from judicial appointments to preserve the neutrality of the Judiciary. As a result, he withheld his approval for Kinobe’s appointment.
However, several of the vetted judges have expressed confidence that their appointments will help address the backlog of cases in the courts of law and ensure the timely delivery of justice.
