On a GRAMMY night overflowing with support for an ailing Los Angeles, one of its proudest native sons has taken home the golden gramophone for Record Of The Year.
A beaming Kendrick Lamar ascended the stage to collect his trophy for “Not Like Us,” the blistering diss track that topped the charts and became an unofficial anthem for L.A., and dedicated the win to the city itself.
“We gon’ dedicate this one to the city,” he said, naming his hometown of Compton, as well as Watts, Long Beach, Inglewood, and a smattering of other neighborhoods and cities. “I can’t give enough thanks to these places that I rolled around since high school, and most importantly the people and the families out in Palisades and Altadena. This is a true testament that we will continue to restore this city.”
Lamar, whose music is heavily associated with Los Angeles and its culture, also mentioned the passing of his aunt, who died the day before the GRAMMYs ceremony.
“She probably watching from up there, make sure y’all got y’all best smiles on, make her feel good.”
“I ain’t got nothing to say but WEST SIDE!” he declared after Lamar had finished speaking.
Lamar was nominated for Record Of The Year alongside the Beatles, Beyoncé, Sabrina Carpenter, Charli xcx, Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan, and Taylor Swift for the award. It was given out by last year’s winner, Miley Cyrus. A 57-time GRAMMY nominee, his previous wins include Best Rap Album for To Pimp A Butterfly and Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for “Alright.”
