PSG complete €70m Kvaratskhelia signing as Napoli eye Rashford

Paris Saint-Germain have completed a stunning €70 million (£59m/$72m) deal to sign Khvicha Kvaratskhelia from Napoli

Kvaratskhelia’s future has been one of the biggest stories of the January transfer window, with Liverpool also said to be considering a move. But the Georgian, a key figure for Napoli as they won their first Serie A title for 33 years in 2023, has signed a deal until 2029 in the French capital after asking to move on this month.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Kvaratskhelia cemented his status as one of the world’s most exciting attacking players during two-and-a-half yeas in Italy, notably scoring 12 goals and assisting 13 as Napoli lifted the Scudetto in 2022-23. The 23-year-old also scored in Georgia’s famous 2-0 win over Portugal at Euro 2024, a victory that saw them qualify for the knockout stages of the competition. He has scored five goals for Antonio Conte’s side in their run to the top of the league this season and his former side are said to be eyeing a move for Marcus Rashford to fill the vacancy on the left wing.

WHAT KVARATSKHELIA SAID

On completing the move, Kvaratskhelia said: “It’s a dream to be here. I’ve heard a lot of very positive things about Paris Saint-Germain. I feel immense pride in joining this great club and I’m really looking forward to wearing my new colours.”

Club president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi added: “Khvicha is one of the most exciting players in world football – a fantastic talent, but also a player who has courage and fights for the team above all else. Khvicha was so determined to be part of our great club. I know he will achieve all his goals with us.”

WHAT NEXT FOR KVARATSKHELIA AND PSG?

Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe have all departed PSG in the last two years, and though the club have deliberately invested in younger talent this move also provides them with world-class quality. Kvaratskhelia will join attacking ranks featuring Ousmane Dembele, Goncalo Ramos and Bradley Barcola as the Parisians aim to end their Champions League drought, as well as securing a fourth straight Ligue 1 title.
