Minister Betty Amongi Delivers President Museveni’s Wealth Creation Message.
Kampala, Uganda – President Yoweri Museveni has called upon traditional and cultural leaders in Uganda to continue promoting local languages and deliver messages of socio-economic transformation to their communities.
He said that in recognition of the important roles played by these leaders, the government has decided to enhance their monthly emoluments to enable them to preserve and promote local languages, undertake programs geared at eliminating negative cultural practices detrimental to the community, and spread messages of wealth creation and socio-economic empowerment within their communities.
In a speech read by the Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Betty Amongi, at the official opening of the national conference for traditional and cultural leaders at the Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala, Museveni stated that the government has also provided transport to recognized traditional leaders to ease their movement while executing their roles and responsibilities.
The theme of the conference was “The Role of Traditional or Cultural Leaders in the Promotion of Culture for Socio-Economic Development in Uganda.”
He added that the government is constructing palaces where they do not exist to ensure decent accommodation for the leaders and that more transport will soon be available.
In addition, Museveni said, “We shall continue to provide security to the cultural and traditional leaders.”
“Therefore, this platform for traditional or cultural leaders to dialogue with government agencies should propose further actions required to strengthen and cement the partnerships between government and institutions of traditional or cultural leaders to ensure you more meaningfully contribute to the socio-economic transformation of the Republic of Uganda,” he said.
He added that there is growing evidence that real and meaningful sustainable development can only come through harnessing our rich cultural values and building resilient and formidable partnerships that are critical in achieving Vision 2040, Africa’s Agenda 2063, and the Sustainable Development Goals (Agenda 2030).
