The National Unity Platform (NUP) leader, Bobi Wine, has officially announced the burial arrangements for the late Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya, who passed away earlier today at Lubaga Hospital.
Ssegirinya, the Kawempe North Member of Parliament, succumbed to a prolonged battle with health complications.
In an address, Bobi Wine revealed that Hon. Ssegirinya’s body will be taken to the NUP party offices in Makerere Kavule for a vigil starting today at 4:00 PM. The vigil will offer supporters and colleagues an opportunity to pay their respects to the late legislator.
Tomorrow at 9:00 AM, the body will be transported to the Parliament of Uganda, where members will gather to honor Ssegirinya and bid him farewell.
Following this, the body will be taken to Kawempe Mbogo Mosque for Islamic funeral prayer.
The final journey will see Hon. Ssegirinya’s remains transported to Masaka, where he will be laid to rest on Sunday.
Addressing the delay in the burial, Bobi Wine clarified that it was not intended to contradict Islamic practices, which encourage prompt burial, but to accommodate friends and relatives from abroad who wish to attend the funeral.
Muhammad Ssegirinya, the Member of Parliament for Kawempe North, has died, Lubaga Hospital has announced.
The hospital confirmed his passing in a statement released on Thursday afternoon, January 9, 2025.
“Ssegirinya has been under the dedicated care of our medical team at Lubaga Hospital. Despite all efforts to ensure his recovery, he passed away today, Thursday, 9th January 2025, at 12:10 pm. On behalf of the hospital, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the Parliament of Uganda, the Speaker, the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Members of Parliament, his family, and the people of Kawempe North, whom he represented with passion and commitment.“
Ssegirinya, who was 37 years old at the time of his death, was elected to Parliament during the 2021 general elections.
In honor of his service, the Parliament of Uganda will hold a special sitting tomorrow, January 10, at 10:00 am, to pay tribute to the late MP.
